Solar Incentives
Governments frequently offer incentives and grants to encourage the adoption of solar energy. These initiatives are designed to assist residential, commercial, and community solar projects by subsidizing a portion of the initial expenses or providing financing at low interest rates. We are dedicated to staying informed about the latest solar grants and incentives accessible to Alberta residents. We are committed to regularly updating this information to ensure that you have the most current details to help you save money on your solar investment.
Canada’s Greener Homes Initiative: The Canada Greener Homes Loan offers interest-free financing to help Canadians make their homes more energy efficient and comfortable. This program provides an interest free loan up to $40,000 for residential solar panel systems. A pre- and post- retrofit energy assessment is required to be qualified for this loan. For more information or to apply visit the Government of Canada website.
Commercial Solar Tax Incentive: This Federal incentive comes to businesses in the form of increased depreciation under class 43.2 of the Income Tax Regulation. The enhanced allowance will initially provide a 100 percent deduction, with a phase out for property that becomes available for use after 2023. We can outline how this will apply to you, but always talk to your accountant when dealing with depreciation and tax incentives. To learn more about this tax incentive visit Natural Resource Canada.
CITC Grants 30%: New for 2024, the Canadian Investment Tax Credit (ITC) is a promising federal program that will provide a refundable tax rebate up to a 30% of a solar project's capital cost until 2034.
Solar Club: Joining Alberta’s Solar Club is a great advantage for homeowners and businesses with solar. This membership allows to have a higher energy rate during months when solar generation exceeds home consumption and change back to a lower rate during winter months when consumption exceeds solar generation. This creates a higher microgeneration credit.
Clean Energy Investment Program (CEIP): The Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP) is Alberta’s innovative financing tool that enables residential and commercial property owners to pay for energy efficiency and renewable energy upgrades. The program gives property owners access to flexible, long-term financing through their municipality. Unlike a traditional loan, repayment is facilitated by a tax added to the property’s tax bill. The Clean Energy Improvement Program is made possible by the Government of Alberta. There are many municipalities currently enrolled in CEIP. Spruce Grove is currently in the application process and we hope to be part of the program in early 2025. You can read more about Spruce Grove’s development here.
